About
East River Park, located along Manhattan's East River, has historically been a significant recreational space, providing waterfront access and green areas for the Lower East Side. Established in the 1930s as a major public works project under Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, it was designed to offer relief and recreation to one of the city's most densely populated neighborhoods. Over the decades, the park has served as a vital community hub, featuring various athletic facilities. Currently, the park is undergoing a massive transformation as part of the East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) Project, a critical infrastructure initiative designed to protect the surrounding neighborhoods from future storm surges and sea-level rise. This project involves elevating and reconstructing the park, including its athletic fields. Therefore, while historically a prominent soccer location with expansive artificial turf fields capable of accommodating multiple full-sided games simultaneously, the specific availability and configuration of the soccer fields are subject to the ongoing construction phases. The goal of the ESCR project is to deliver an even more resilient and modern park, with improved facilities. When complete, the fields are expected to be well-lit for night play, continuing the park's tradition as a major soccer destination. Access is primarily by bus or walking from various subway lines (L to 1st Ave, F to Delancey St).
